Research Development

UVA’s Research Development team is a strategic resource for faculty pursuing external funding for large, collaborative projects. Services include identifying appropriately-scaled opportunities, managing the proposal development process, and providing advice and iterative reviews to enhance competitiveness of proposals. The team also manages the university’s selection process for limited submission opportunities, and provides research intelligence to inform decisions relevant to the research enterprise. We work with partners across Grounds and beyond to support the university’s goal of increasing the quality and quantity of externally funded research at UVA.

Proposal Development

Research Development team members work directly with faculty pursuing external funding for large, collaborative projects, Center-scale efforts, and training proposals of strategic institutional importance. The team coordinates with staff and services offered within Schools and The College, as well as the Office of Sponsored Programs, Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Libraries, and Federal Relations, among others. Our services are described here (LINK) and are available upon request and at the discretion of the Associate VP for Research Development. Services must be requested at least 3 months prior to the sponsor’s deadline.

Limited Submission Opportunities

Limited submission opportunities (LSOs) are those in which the sponsor has placed a restriction on the number of proposals, applications, or nominations that may be submitted from an institution. The Research Development team coordinates the university’s selection process for LSOs.

Find Funding Opportunities

Research Development manages the licenses for and provides training on databases (Pivot and GrantForward) that allow researchers to identify funding opportunities relevant to their projects.

Graphics for Proposals

The VPR’s office is able to provide limited graphics support for grant proposals. This is offered through the Communications team. You can review their portfolio of completed projects and access their request for services form here.

Skill and Awareness Development

The Research Development team curates and creates workshops, training events, webinars and programs designed to enhance our faculty’s grant-getting skills and increase awareness of sponsor expectations. You may access recorded webinars on our Resources page.
